Why Are You Saying ‘No’?
We need to stop getting in our own way
‘Do you want to go to that cool place today?’
‘Nah, let’s go next weekend.’
‘Shall we go for a run this morning?’
‘Umm, no, maybe tomorrow morning?’
‘Let’s learn to windsurf!’
‘What? Why we would want to do that?’
Is any of this sounding familiar? There are so many articles out there about the power of ‘no’ and how we should all be using it more in our lives, especially our working lives.
Because as much as the above might sound familiar, so might the following.
‘Can you finish that report by 5pm?’
‘Yeah sure! (oh god I don’t have time)’
‘I need you to pick up Andy’s work load as he’s off next week. That’s fine right?’
‘Absolutely! (what?!)’
‘Hey I’m having a hen weekend abroad! It’s four nights, all inclusive and only £600 each! You’ll be there right?’
‘I wouldn’t miss it! (I’m going to having to take out a loan)’
It’s no wonder that we say no to our loved ones and to trying new things in our downtime. We so rarely say no in our professional lives or to friends that might be let down.
